Score Study: Don Giovanni Act I: Recitative, Scene IV

mm. 16-19:  These lines must be delivered without rests, one cutting off the other:

L:  “E il giuramento” must interrupt D.G’s “in tal guisa-“ / D. G.’s “non so..” must cut off “guiramento” / L.’s “Non parlo piu” must cut off  D.G’s “o ch’io…”.  The pacing cannot be allowed to drag and these may need to be propelled through insertions from the continuo if the cast is not experienced enough to keep the forward momentum on their own.

M. 28, clearly enunciate double consonants on “innamorato” and “bella” – especially if stage direction includes indulgence of the sensuality of these words and what they mean.

The overall “tempo” of Giovanni’s lines from m. 32 onward (ie. His comments about the smells and sights of his newest love) should be on the slower, indulgent side.  This in contrast to the urgency of “Ritiriamoci un poco…”  which should be delivered quickly to motivate Leporello’s response “Gia prese foco.”
